Apple's Digital ID: Innovation Meets Hesitation

I'll be honest, I'm not entirely sure how I feel about adding my passport to my phone.

Apple's Digital ID: Innovation Meets Hesitation

Apple just announced Digital ID this week, a new feature that lets you add your U.S. passport information to Apple Wallet.

The technology is undeniably slick. You scan your passport's photo page, tap it against your phone to read the embedded chip, take a selfie, and complete some facial movements for verification. At TSA checkpoints, you double-click your phone, hold it near a reader, and authenticate with Face ID. Apple promises the data is encrypted and stored only on your device, with no tracking of when or where you present your ID.

But here's the reality: this service is brand new, launching just this week in beta. While it's available at over 250 U.S. airports, not every checkpoint will have the technology yet. It only works for domestic travel, you'll still need your physical passport for international trips. And it builds on Apple's 2022 digital driver's license feature that's only available in 12 states and Puerto Rico after three years.

From a tech consulting perspective, this represents an interesting intersection of convenience and caution. Yes, the security architecture looks solid. But adoption infrastructure takes time, and being an early adopter means navigating those growing pains. For business travelers especially, you're betting on technology working flawlessly when you're rushing to catch a flight.

My advice? If you're curious, try it on a low-stakes domestic trip where you have plenty of time. But keep that physical ID handy until this technology matures beyond its beta phase.
